Where to go and
what to do in Somerset - The Somerset Levels
This
unique landscape of low-lying wetlands gives rise
to a rich wildlife which is of international significance.
Meadows, edged by "rhynes" - water courses
that are overhung by willow trees, create a tranquil,
timeless atmosphere for relaxing and unwinding.
The
gentle, undulating terrain and quiet roads make
it perfect countryside for walking and cycling
where the slower pace makes it easier to spot
herons, wildfowl and birds of prey, damsel and
dragonflies at close quarters
The Levels
are noted for its angling waters, as several
rivers cut through the area on their way to
the coast. This provides an excellent opportunity
for coarse fishing. Traditional
local industries include peat digging, withy
growing for basket-making and cider making.
Products can all be purchased locally.
